I think Viacom has the right to increase prices but direct TV on the other hand should not be affected since technology and broadcasting prices seems to be going down rapidly.
It is cheaper today to broadcast something than say 5 or 10 years ago shouldn't that actually lower direct TV's cost ? on the other hand it is becoming more expensive for channels to produce a quality show where they have to pay the actors (who are becoming expensive day by day) and all the other tangible production costs.
Both companies are acting like brats. Viacom is screwing Directv, but DTV is screwing me... so if I have to pick one to be wrong, I pick Direct TV.
I called DTV to see if I can get out of my contract, because TV without the Daily Show is pretty much worthless. They gave me a $20/mo credit for 6 months, but refused to waive the $300 early cancellation fee. That contract they had me sign is horrible. I'm ashamed of myself for signing. It clearly states that they can raise the rates if they need to and that they can change their programming offerings at any time the want to. So here I am paying what they say I have to for the channels they say I'm allowed to watch... I feel so screwed over and stupid for not questioning every clause in the contract before I signed.
DTV has me bent over for 13 more months, and then I'm outta there. I think I'll move to more web-based pay-per-view stuff.
DirecTV wants us the consumer to be able to have a say in what channels we want to get. Viacom won't allow DirecTV to sell the channels separately, so DirecTV doesn't want to pay more money to Viacom for channels that less and less viewers are watching by the day. If Viacom would agree to not requiring all of their channels to be purchased, DirecTV would be OK with the price hike since consumers could choose to not receive certain channels to keep the costs down.
