Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg recently set off quite a debate in the tech world when she said she leaves work at 5:30 p.m. But Pete Cashmore asks: Whatever happened to "work life balance"?
Stop your whining- There's plenty of H1-Bs that won't mind 80 hour weeks for a fraction of your pay.

Unfortunately, many technology roles require extended periods of concentration, with work controlled by large volumes of knowledge, acquired by extended periods of study. In my experience, to make a really great product, you have to cultivate an always-on obsessiveness, a philosophy of life and a mode of living that is at odds with the 9-to-5 expectations of our parents' generation. Unless your work is your life, then it is unlikely that you will make a significant impact in a technology role. In fact; - pertinent to the rather strange phrasing of the question - getting promotions should not be on your radar at all - making a great product should be.
