According to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg she works from 9:00-5:30pm everyday no more no less is this a good thing for everybody if they are trying to climb the totem pole. Do you agree with this?

Why it's OK to leave a tech job at 5 p.m.
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg recently set off quite a debate in the tech world when she said she leaves work at 5:30 p.m. But Pete Cashmore asks: Whatever happened to "work life balance"?

"Is it OK to leave tech job at 5:30 p.m.?" - sure if you have everyone else doing the job you should be doing as the COO. That's what being an executive is all about, getting paid while others do your job.

Society has been trained to think that you have to give your life for your job, making everyone else wealthy and not having a life of your own.

Stop your whining- There's plenty of H1-Bs that won't mind 80 hour weeks for a fraction of your pay.
Oh sure, they burn out- but there's countless more to cycle through.  It's like changing the oil on your car and discarding the used sludge

Unfortunately, many technology roles require extended periods of concentration, with work controlled by large volumes of knowledge, acquired by extended periods of study. In my experience, to make a really great product, you have to cultivate an always-on obsessiveness, a philosophy of life and a mode of living that is at odds with the 9-to-5 expectations of our parents' generation. Unless your work is your life, then it is unlikely that you will make a significant impact in a technology role. In fact; - pertinent to the rather strange phrasing of the question - getting promotions should not be on your radar at all - making a great product should be.

I agree, The main reason for doing a job should not be about promotion, but more about the drive to succeed personally and professionally.

In the tech world it is easier to do 9 to 5 because a lot of the work is more about inspiration which has no sense of time.

I personally love doing what i do and never had to sacrifice my personal life for it. Its not about 9-5 but more about getting the work done.
